Empowering Filipino Seniors through Cybersecurity: Consulate General Hosts Cybersecurity Workshop in Collaboration with Pinoy Tech Victoria

19 October 2024, MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA – Philippine Consulate General in Melbourne, in collaboration with the newly-formed professional organization Pinoy Tech Victoria, successfully hosted a Cybersecurity Workshop for Seniors titled “Your Digital World, Your Rules: Take Control of Your Online Safety” on 19 October 2024. This event was designed to promote digital literacy and empower senior citizens in the Filipino community to protect themselves from online threats.

The workshop, attended by approximately 20 participants, was a highly informative event aimed at raising awareness of cybersecurity issues. The session focused on protecting online privacy, managing digital footprints, and safeguarding against common threats such as social engineering, fake news, and misinformation. Participants were given hands-on guidance on securing public Wi-Fi and improving password safety, including the use of two-factor authentication and enhancing personal device security.

Consul General Maria Lourdes M. Salcedo opened the event by acknowledging the importance of such initiatives in supporting the Filipino community, especially senior citizens. She also highlighted the Consulate’s commitment to hosting more workshops and seminars for the benefit of the Filipino community.

Pinoy Tech Victoria President John Arvee Ocampo and Ms. Janice Ocampo led the sessions, sharing valuable insights into the risks and opportunities of navigating the digital world. They also discussed artificial intelligence, emphasizing how to use technology safely and responsibly.

In addition to the workshop, the newly-elected officers of Pinoy Tech Victoria took their oath of office in a ceremony presided over by the undersigned. The closing remarks, delivered by Consul Jan Sherwin P. Wenceslao, reflected on the day’s success and the importance of continued efforts to protect the Filipino community in the digital age.

The event concluded with a traditional Filipino merienda, featuring beloved dishes such as pancit, taho, and turon, providing an opportunity for participants to further engage with one another and the facilitators. Feedback from attendees was overwhelmingly positive, with many expressing interest in future workshops for the wider community to further enhance their digital safety.
