Equipping New Filipino Students with Vital Information through PAOS

12 July 2024, MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA –  The Philippine Consulate General in Melbourne successfully conducted its fourth Post Arrival Orientation Seminar (PAOS) for Filipino students, with around fifty participants in attendance. The seminar covered essential topics for overseas Filipino students such as living and studying in Australia, focusing on available resources, support services, community and occupational health, and safety. The presentations aimed to provide students with the crucial information needed to effectively navigate their life and studies in Australia.

Philippine Consul General Maria Lourdes M. Salcedo opened the PAOS with a short message acknowledging the significant presence of Filipino students in Victoria and stressing the importance of understanding their rights and privileges.

Mr. Reymond Pepito, president of FASTCO, outlined the organization’s services and upcoming initiatives, including its three-year work plan, the International Research Forum on the Philippines (IRFP) in collaboration with La Trobe University scheduled for 01-02 August 2024 and the upcoming election of new officers.

Mr. Neil Evangelista, My Melbourne Student Ambassador, presented on Melbourne’s Global Attraction for International Education. He highlighted various support programs available to international students designed to facilitate their integration and enhance their experience in Melbourne.

The Consulate General’s services for Filipinos overseas were outlined by Consul Jan Sherwin Wenceslao. He further emphasized the significance of registering for overseas absentee voting for the upcoming Philippine National and Local Elections in 2025.

Ms. Jenny Casimero from The Empowered Australian Multicultural Society Inc. (TEAMS) discussed effective strategies for networking within the Filipino community and shared practical tips on job applications and CV writing. She encouraged active participation in Filipino community events to strengthen connections.

Ms. Florence Macusi Dato from the Migrant Workers Centre (MWC) briefed participants on Australian labor standards and entitlements important for overseas students, such as minimum wage, overtime, and protections against discrimination.

Atty. Alfe Roder of Roder Lawyers explained the recent changes to Australia’s visa policies affecting students and temporary migrants, highlighting the policy adjustments effective from 1 July 2024.

Representatives from Whittlesea Community Connections, including lawyers Mr. Moses Florendo and Ms. Michelle Martinez and Mr. Sean Robertson, briefed on aspects of Australian law relevant to international students. They covered key areas such as housing and leasing, accident and liability concerns, and strategies for addressing domestic issues and harassment.

A networking merienda was also held, featuring Café Kusina, a Filipino restaurant. Feedback from participants was positive, with many expressing anticipation for future events organized by the Consulate General.

The Philippine Consulate General in Melbourne remains dedicated to supporting Filipino international students across Victoria, Tasmania, and South Australia. As of 2023, the Philippines ranks as the fifth largest source of international students in Australia, boasting 6,485 students in Victoria alone, as reported by the Australian Department of Education.
