Melbourne PCG hosts Seminar on Women’s Issues

In observance of Philippine National Women’s Month, the Philippine Consulate General in Melbourne hosted a “Seminar on Women Issues,” the first official event held at its permanent office at Level 10, Collins St., Melbourne, Victoria on 20 March 2021.

The resource speakers were Mr. Anthony Mandap, Deputy Consul General, and Mr. Graeme Lade, Chairperson of the Australian Cervical Cancer Foundation.

In her welcome remarks, Consul General Maria Lourdes Salcedo said that the Philippines celebrates the entire month of March as National Women’s Month while the rest of the world celebrates International Women’s Day on 8 March only. “This year we also celebrate the 45th anniversary of the Philippine Commission on Women, formerly National Commission on the Role of Filipino Women, and the 25th anniversary of the Beijing Platform for Action, the global roadmap on women’s issues,” she informed around 25 participants.

Mr. Mandap spoke on the topic “Falling in and out of Love in Australia: Philippine Law on Foreign Marriage, Divorce and Annulment.” He discussed legal provisions relevant to marriage and divorce of Filipino nationals in foreign countries, including the procedures for reporting marriages in the Philippine civil registry.

For his part, Mr. Lade, discussed programs and initiatives to eliminate cervical cancer in the Philippines and many Asian countries. ”It is a highly preventable disease but unfortunately still ranks as among the highest causes of cancer and death among women,” he said.

Mr. Lade urged Filipino women in Australia to ensure that their children are vaccinated, and all women aged 25 to 70 are screened regularly.

The seminar was attended by about 25 participants representing the newly formed Women Association, Inc. and the Women Group from Cranbourne.
