FilCom Pays Tribute to Benefactor Ronald Bunker

PR-34-2023

The Philippine Consulate General in Melbourne, in collaboration with community leaders hosted a special tribute reception for Ronald “Ron” Maurice Bunker on 13 November 2023. The event is a response to the Australian-Filipino Community’s numerous requests in Victoria to honor Mr. Bunker’s remarkable 50 years of service, commitment, and friendship towards Filipinos in both Australia and the Philippines.

Mr. Bunker, or Ron as he is fondly referred to by Filipinos, was instrumental in the purchase of the 4.9-hectare property in Laverton which has been managed by the Philippine Fiesta, Inc. since the 1990s.  He likewise supported Filipino Community events in Victoria and gave philanthropic funding to send children from Tondo and Isabela to school.

At the tribute, Ron had a reunion with long-time friends like the 98-year old Timmie Barber, who rendered a song for the honoree.  Others present were friends Eddie Atacador, Maina Walkley, Elmer Ragel, Lulu Lorenzo, Fred Jover, and Roy Carbungco as well as three generations of Ron’s family.  The gathering was a delightful and memorable celebration for everyone.

Philippine Consul General Maria Lourdes Salcedo thanked Ron for his support for Filipino events and causes for nearly half a century. She also awarded him a Certificate of Appreciation on behalf of the Australian-Filipino Community of Victoria. Additionally, Mr. Atacador presented Mr. Bunker with a Certificate of Recognition from the Knox Community Chess Enthusiasts (KCCE) in recognition of his efforts in promoting multicultural understanding through the game of chess.

Eddie Atacador commended Ron for his motivational role in the establishment of the KCCE, which significantly contributed to multicultural awareness in Knox City and provided a meaningful pastime for the local senior male community members. Mr. Atacador also shared his experiences with Ron, particularly his pivotal role as Chairman of the Philippine Fiesta of Victoria, Inc.  Close friend Henry Ricaris shared personal stories that highlighted Ron’s integrity, loyalty, and generosity.  These anecdotes resonated with everyone present, painting Ron as a steadfast friend and supporter of the Filipino community.

The event also featured an exquisite performance by Bernardo Soler, an internationally renowned Classical Guitarist, who played Malaguena, Tanging Yaman, and You Are My Sunshine as a heartfelt tribute to Mr. Bunker.
