PR-36-2022
The Philippine Consulate General in Melbourne supported the online “Fiesta Filipinas Season 2: An Online Celebration of Philippine Festival featuring Kadayawan Festival” on 24 September 2022. Fiesta Filipinas is a cultural diplomacy initiative of the Department of Foreign Affairs of the Philippines, the Department of Tourism, and the National Commission for Culture and the Arts.

In this online event, the participants experienced the Kadayawan Festival thru a virtual tour of Davao, particularly in Mt. Apo, the Philippines’ highest point and pride of the region. The participants also toured virtually to the Bagobo Tagabawa Cultural Village located at the foot of Mt Apo where one of the 11 tribes presented their way of life – culture, lifestyle and tradition. The Malagos Garden Resort was also featured where the famous malagos chocolate is made.

Inside the Kadayawan Festival kits, distributed by the Consulate to participants, are the two most popular local dishes and served as a pair – the puto maya and tsokolate de Davao. The puto maya is steamed sticky rice in coconut milk and ginger, while the tsokolate de Davao is made from ground cacao beans from Davao. Also included in the kits were mangosteen candies, durian toffee candies, banana chips and cacao perfume.

According to James Mckinnon, a bisita (virtual tourist) from Melbourne, his favorite part of the online event was the virtual tour. He said “it is very exciting to see everybody around the world being part of the fiesta celebration.”

The Philippine Consulate General in Melbourne was assisted by Ms. Rosa Almencion, also known as Mommy YouTuber, in airing and sharing the event.
