12 July 2024, MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA \u2013\u00a0 The Philippine Consulate General in Melbourne successfully conducted its fourth Post Arrival Orientation Seminar (PAOS) for Filipino students, with around fifty participants in attendance. The seminar covered essential topics for overseas Filipino students such as living and studying in Australia, focusing on available resources, support services, community and occupational health, and safety. The presentations aimed to provide students with the crucial information needed to effectively navigate their life and studies in Australia.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Mr. Reymond Pepito, president of FASTCO, outlined the organization’s services and upcoming initiatives, including its three-year work plan, the International Research Forum on the Philippines (IRFP) in collaboration with La Trobe University scheduled for 01-02 August 2024 and the upcoming election of new officers.<\/p>

Mr. Neil Evangelista, My Melbourne Student Ambassador, presented on Melbourne\u2019s Global Attraction for International Education. <\/em>He highlighted various support programs available to international students designed to facilitate their integration and enhance their experience in Melbourne.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

(TEAMS) discussed effective strategies for networking within the Filipino community and shared practical tips on job applications and CV writing. She encouraged active participation in Filipino community events to strengthen connections.<\/p>

Ms. Florence Macusi Dato from the Migrant Workers Centre (MWC) briefed participants on Australian labor standards and entitlements important for overseas students, such as minimum wage, overtime, and protections against discrimination.<\/p>

Atty. Alfe Roder of Roder Lawyers explained the recent changes to Australia\u2019s visa policies affecting students and temporary migrants, highlighting the policy adjustments effective from 1 July 2024.<\/p>

Representatives from Whittlesea Community Connections, including lawyers Mr. Moses Florendo and Ms. Michelle Martinez and Mr. Sean Robertson, briefed on aspects of Australian law relevant to international students. They covered key areas such as housing and leasing, accident and liability concerns, and strategies for addressing domestic issues and harassment.<\/p>

A networking merienda was also held, featuring Caf\u00e9 Kusina, a Filipino restaurant. Feedback from participants was positive, with many expressing anticipation for future events organized by the Consulate General. <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
